BBQ Pork

Did everyone have a good weekend? Did you do all that you set out to? I did but I might've overdosed on tv Saturday. I loved every minute of it though :)

What is this a picture of? So last week Safeway had this giant pork shoulder on sale and of course Keene could not resist. So we brought it home, he doctored it up, threw it in the slow-cooker with some onions, bbq sauce, syrup, Frank's hot sauce and worchestershire...8 hours later...lots of pork was ready to be had.

I made a quick slaw salad to go along side it, and put mine over toast. Slow cooked meat = brilliant every time.

This project is from the same tutorial to make these paper beads, but I used my new heart-shaped punch. I think I like these hearts even better. I kindof want to get my hair styled in a beehive to wear the earrings with, and get a ridiculous manicure and some cat-eye glasses.

Now what I want to know is: What are your weekend plans?
I have almost none...lots of "to-dos" but making pancakes on Sunday which is going to be the highlight! :)

Chasin' the dragon since 2002

You guys, I've got a fever, and the only prescription is a Turkish/German dönner tasche! Yeah, I subsisted entirely off dönner during my 3 month internship in Germany and I haven't had one since. This is freaking criminal. I try to put the dönner out of my mind, but it just keeps coming back, taunting me...it's all, "haha, you have to come back to Germany to get me...I don't exist in the States...Hahahahaha". Rude.

Let me give you the rundown on the specifics of the dönner tasche:
There's your typical giant rotating meat (you've seen this before, "gyros", a sorry excuse for the dönner kebab, have this basic ingredient as well). You're off to a great start.

They put that delicious shaved meat into a flat bread "pouch" of sorts. Then there's the Tzaziki-like herb garlic sauce, lettuce, tomatoes, red pickled cabbage, cucumber, onions and peppers.

Then they press it all in a panini press - BAH!
I'm all like:

Some day, you guys. Some day I will make it back to the motherland and get me one (or ten) of those dönner from Efes deli. Some day!!!

And I'm sorry to say, but we need this, badly. The weather has been so miserably cold and wet and gross (dirty snow = not cute) and it was just so damn time.

*Feeling warm, not wearing socks...or gloves, or scarves, or hats...yeah
*OCEAN!!! Dayum I miss the ocean, and this one's turquoise!
*Umbrella drinks, poolside!
*Ima eat a conch shell or whatevs, or however you eat that stuff
*Mosey-in' around, not working
*go to the outdoor market, buy tourist crap
*drink Kalik beer ("What’s great about cowbells? Anyone can play them. What’s great about Kalik? Anyone can drink it.")

Things we may or may not do, depending on if we want to make the effort:
*nature ride in jeep around national park
*swim with dolphins (honestly, this is "ambitious" to me)
*go to the Casino, win hella money
*snorkelin'
*fishin'

We'll probably just sit our asses on the beach staring at the clear water and that thing called "the sun" drinking pina coladas the whole time...I can't wait. Crap I need to stock up on more SPF Murtaugh+.

Brilliant Date at the Apt.

So you guys know that we are a couple who really likes to go out to eat. This Valentine's Day, however, I didn't mind skipping the fancy restaurant (usually I'll take any excuse to go out!). I'm not a huge fan of waiting, crowds, or prix fixe menus, so we decided to make dinner at home. I was not into actually doing much work, so we splurged a bit and picked up some more of those AMAZING raviolis from Eastern Market. This time they had some ♥TOO CUTE♥ red, heart-shaped lobster ravioli, so we had to get those along with trying some of the caramelized onion and mushroom raviolis. We also bought a vodka sauce, so all that needed to be done was heat it all up and throw together a salad (for the nutrients). Dudes - this stuff was decadent and awesome. I totally think it's worth the money because all the hard work is done for you and they are really, really good. Ravioli. Mmmm...we also did our taxes and watched more Olympics. Go TEAM USA! What were y'all up to on Valentine's Day?

The last of the snow pics...(I hope)

I really really hope these are the last of the snow pics. I mean, seriously, people. This madness has to end! Today was our last "snow day" and we got to go OUTSIDE! Like, in the world where there are people! It was total over stimulation. But it was fun. I got the buffalo chicken burger I'd been dreaming about and we had some beers.

Omg, remember shorts? And not wearing socks? Or two pairs of pants at once? Or having the windows open with a nice gentle warm breeze? And cold beers on warm days on decks? And bar-b-ques? And saltwater air? And green grass? And when our deck looked like this?

You can not see that lantern right now. It's buried. And it's being threatened by the 2' icicles hanging off the roof of the deck. Lawd I am so over this. By the end of May I will be poolside, mai tai in hand, with mah ladies, in Vegas...*zen*thinking positive*

And after that I will be back in the PNW!!! (and right when I'd fallen for you again, DC, you go and have the most snowfall ever in one winter. Nice.)

Peanut Butter Blizzard Time!

I tried to document the blizzard going down outside right now...this is the best I could do.
This snow is ridiculous. At least we both get to be at home and don't have to go outside in it. But dayum. Have you ever seen your city filled with "snow bergs"? That's what you get when there's no where to put all the snow. Also: I never knew how much dog pee I was walking over on a daily basis until it appeared everywhere, glowing and neon against the white snow. Delightful.

I am so grateful we made it to soviet Safeway yesterday morning before they sold out of stuff. Why didn't we get more wine though!??! I don't know what we were thinking. Today is going to be an on-demand movie kind of day. No complaints here! But it's a little scary outside. *Think calm, non-electricity-losing thoughts for us!*

Snowed-in Activities n' Stuff

What to do when you're snowed-in? Um...BAKE, people! The last time I made this bread I remember it being really easy and turning out awesome. Yep, still awesome. Even when I had to sub regular onions, smoked paprika and mexican cheese for the ingredients the recipe called for.

The hardest part was remembering to NOT drink one of our beers (this time it was Goose Island Nut Brown - pretty dang good!) and save it for the recipe. Of course I had to make it a party and drink a mimosa while I put it all together. *Fun* :)

People who have to get to work through blizzard aftermath, are tough.
Thank you to all the Metro workers today, who had to get to their jobs somehow. The majority of everyone actually should NOT be trying to get to work today, but I get that there will always be certain people who have to do their jobs, and those people deserve a beer right now.

These crazy michelin-man boots that I bought in November have proved to be my best investment of the year:

Initially I felt a little bad forking over for northface, but dayum, they have already paid for themselves. This is supposed to be the snowiest winter DC has ever had. Thank you, boots.

Not sure if you heard, but DC got some snow...

Snomageddon (or snogasm, snovechkin, snohedidnt, snowmaGetItOn, snowF**kYourself, "the white death", and GroceryStore thunderdome) went down this weekend just as they'd predicted starting Friday evening.

On Saturday we bundled up A LOT and walked down to the foot of the Capitol. It was really pretty but I didn't have my good camera with me. Bummer! Just picture 2 feet of snow, lots of dogs and kids and people and snow plows. Thankfully our faithful corner store still had wine and beer and DARK CHOCOLATE. Delightful!

It's important for you guys to know that there is still this much snow on the ground right now and I came to work (uphill both ways) - I get a gold goddamned star. Now I've lived in DC during one of it's top 5 snowstorms EVER, in addition to being in Seattle last Summer during it's hottest day, EVER. 2 gold stars?
